Whiskey ‘can cure your ailments’

An engraved advertisement dated to c.1880, £400 at Bloomsbury Auctions.

“Try a glass of Old Bushmills whiskey, your majesty, it is the whiskey all connoisseurs drink”. Not only that, but it seems this royally promoted tipple was “… recommended by Doctors in cases of Gout and Rheumatism as the most helpful drink”.

Dated to c.1880 by Bloomsbury Auctions (25/20/12% buyer’s premium), the engraved advertisement featured in its October 31 sale of a single-owner collection of photographs and other items related to the Qajar and Pahlavi dynasties of Persian and Iranian rulers.

The Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, is seen pouring a glass of the favoured tipple for Naser ad-Din Shah Qajar, said Bloomsbury.

This promotion sold for £400.
