A 19th century Russian shashka sword with fine niello-worked ornament sold for £6700 against an estimate of £250-450 at Amersham Auction Rooms (17.5% buyer’s premium) on August 1.

The 2ft 6in (76cm) long curved blade was engraved with floral and other designs, a standing figure below a cross and a back-to-back eagle emblem, and came in a hide-covered and white-metal mounted scabbard with conforming niello decoration.
