This watercolour drawing by Charles Addams was one of the more successful lots in a December 10 Illustration Art sale held by Swann Galleries (25/20/10% buyer’s premium) in New York.

Although not remotely in the same record-breaking, six-figure price category as the copy of Poe’s The Raven and other Poems featured in ATG No 2425, this original artwork for a now famous cartoon that was first published in a 1973 issue of The New Yorker nevertheless became one of the auction’s top lots at a high-estimate $18,000 (£13,635).
It depicts Edgar Allan Poe, seated beneath images of a tortoise, a pig and an elk, as he struggles to find the perfect voice for his narrative poem Nevermore.
