A copy of the 1892 Olympic Manifesto made an auction record for sports memorabilia when it was hammered down for $7.5m (£5.73m).

It was offered at Sotheby’s Fine Books and Manuscripts auction on December 18 with an estimate of $700,000-1m. With premium added the price was $8.8m.
In the autograph manuscript, French aristocrat Pierre de Coubertin details his vision for a modern revival of the ancient Olympic Games. He delivered the 14-page document in a speech to a crowd at the Sorbonne. It had never been publicly exhibited until the auction.
