Lucie Rie bowl among strong selection of modern British ceramics

Lucie Rie bowl with a guide price is €5000 at the Schops Turowski auction on May 11 in Krefeld.

Modern British ceramics are rarely offered by German auction houses. Among the notable exceptions is the Kunst & Design Auktionshaus Schops Turowski, based in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia.

The auctioneers previously ran the saleroom Herr in Cologne which they sold in 2014. Last year they opened a new venture under their own names.

Studio ceramics are well represented in their May 11 sale with a strong selection by British artists.

Most prominent among these is the Austrian-born Lucie Rie (1902-95), who emigrated to Britain in 1938.

Nine of her pieces are on offer, among them this almost 4in (10cm) high conical bowl with its textured surface in sgraffito technique and pink, turquoise and manganese decoration. International collectors can be expected to join in the sale in Krefeld, where the guide price is €5000.
