The hope at every house clearance came true for Reading auctioneer Chris Boreham when he unearthed this set of four Georgian silver rococo candlesticks at a local home.

“They had been hidden and I think forgotten about. Since when we found them their appearance caused quite a stir,” said Boreham, who pitched the set at £2000- 2500 at his April 26 sale at Thimbleby & Shoreland (12% buyer’s premium).
By William Brown, London 1827, the 11½in (29cm) tall sticks, highly repoussé decorated with fruit and flowers, sold to a private buyer at £5900.
