Box bears the magic name of Churchill

While £90,000 is an awful lot of money for an empty metal box, this old black painted and gold lettered deed box does bear the magic name of Winston Churchill.

Metal box with the name Winston Churchill – £90,000 at Sotheby’s.

That was what pushed the bidding far beyond a suggested £6000-8000 in a Sotheby’s (25/20/12.9% buyer’s premium) online sale that ended on December 10.

Churchill would have owned several such boxes in which to keep his personal records and documents – as opposed to official dispatch boxes and the like – and this one is thought to date from some point before 1922. After that date he was entitled to add the letters CH for Companion of Honour – but it would have been a bit of squeeze.
