Signed and dated 1968, the titled slip of this (1.91m) painting is signed by Zeng Ke Duan (1900-76), the famous calligrapher and professor at the University of Hong Kong. He was Zhang Da Qian’s closest friend and partner and was often asked to inscribe important works from his oeuvre.
From an English private collection, it was given by the artist to the owner’s father over afternoon tea sometime between c.1970-80.
Teabowl stand
The Japanese works of art sale at Woolley & Wallis on May 21 includes this negoro-style lacquer tenmoku-dai (a stand for a tenmoku teabowl) from the Muromachi period (1333-1573).
This rare piece, once owned by author and British Museum curator Roger Soame Jenyns (1904-76) and purchased from Mayuyama & Co, comes from the collection of an English gentleman who bought it at Spink.
Estimate £2000-3000.
