The frigate on this ‘American market’ jug flies a 16-star, 16-stripe flag, the unofficial design used to mark the arrival of Tennessee as the 16th state in the Union in 1796. Officially the US flag did not change design until 1818 when it was updated to include 13 stripes and 20 stars.
This 10in (25cm) jug, with some imperfections, is printed with a pastoral landscape to the reverse and includes the painted initials RES within a laurel leaf cartouche beneath the spout.
Estimate $900-1200.
