Adding a classical touch to a highly successful five-day sale at West Sussex auction house Bellmans (22% buyer’s premium) was a 1st century AD Greco-Roman marble lower torso of Aphrodite.

Fifteen years ago it made a premium-inclusive £9400 at Christie’s South Kensington but at the Wisborough Green rooms on November 20 the 4ft 6in (1.38m) tall piece was given a here-to-sell estimate of £1000-2000.
Not the highest price in the sale, but it brought a satisfactory trade bid of £10,000.
