Famous fables at Christie’s sale of French family library

A copy of the 1755-59 issue of Jean de la Fontaine’s ‘Fables choisies mises en vers’ – estimated at €150,000-250,000 at Christie’s Paris.

From November 26-28 Christie’s Paris will disperse part of the family library of the Comtesse Martine de Béhague (1869-1939) and Hubert de Ganay (1888-1974).

A copy of the 1755-59 issue of Jean de la Fontaine’s ‘Fables choisies mises en vers’ – estimated at €150,000-250,000 at Christie’s Paris.

One of a great many treasures on offer is a splendid copy of the 1755-59 issue of Jean de la Fontaine’s Fables choisies mises en vers illustrated with engraved plates after Jean-Baptiste Oudry.

Bound as four volumes in red morocco gilt bearing the arms of the Comte d’Artois, the future Charles X, it is a copy in which all plates and ornaments are fully coloured.

Estimate €150,000-250,000.
