Comics played a significant part in a recent held by Mitchells (20% buyer’s premium) of Cockermouth, undoubtedly helped by the presence of some 30,000 Marvel comics from one private collection.

This was not one of those US sales where enormous six-figure sums are paid for single rarities, but one where job lots were very obviously the order of the day.
Pictured above is the highest-priced lot in the whole sale: a group of 19 US issues of Marvel’s X-Men comics dating from the years 1975-78 – some priced in cents, other in pence – which sold for £680 on thesaleroom.com rather than the suggested £80-120.
The sale was held on February 6.
